Course Length: 24 hours.

Course Description:
This course is designed to equip participants with the skills needed to be full or part-time PIOs, including oral and written communications, understanding and working with the media, and basic tools and techniques to perform effectively as a PIO, both in the proactive/advocacy times and crisis/emergency response. The course will also consider the value of communication before, during and after an incident. It will help PIOs identify critical audiences, both internal and external.

Individuals who have public information responsibilities as their main job or as an auxiliary function at the federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial level of government, and in the private and nongovernmental sectors.

Mandatory Prerequisite:
• IS-29: Public Information Officer Awareness.
The mandatory prerequisite must be completed before requesting enrollment in L105. Waivers will not be granted under any circumstance. IS-29 certificate of completion or FEMA transcript showing IS-29 completion must be uploaded during L105 registration.

Recommended Prerequisites:
•IS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100.
•IS-909: Community Preparedness, Implementing Simple Activities for Everyone.

*Enrollment Policy: Registrants must have the status of “Enrolled” to attend any class or event. Registrants who are “Waitlisted” or “Pending Approval” will not be allowed to attend the class. If you need to cancel enrollment, please do so as early as possible to allow someone on the waitlist to be enrolled.

*Attendance Policy: Attendees must attend at least 90% of the class to be able to receive credit. Should an attendee need to miss any portion of the class, they must contact the DEMA Training Branch beforehand for further information.
