First responders at the awareness level are individuals who are likely to witness or discover a hazardous substance release. This 8-hour course is designed to provide those individuals with the basic knowledge to be able to analyze the incident and notify the proper authorities of the release in order protect life, property and minimize the environmental impact of a hazardous materials incident. They take no further action beyond notification.

• Detecting the presence of hazardous materials
• Beginning identification
• Initiating evacuation
• Establishing personnel protection and decontamination
• Isolating the incident and identifying zones of activity
• Containing the incident (if possible) from an isolated position without risk of exposure
• Seeking additional appropriate resource

All who enroll will initially be listed as “Pending Host Approval” until their eligibility as a primary stakeholder in this training can be confirmed. Eligibility will be reviewed on a weekly basis. If you remain “Pending”, it either means your eligibility could not be confirmed, or the list of eligible participants is being prioritized. You will be contacted if we require additional information regarding your eligibility. Once confirmed to attend, participants will be sent an enrollment confirmation via email.

*Enrollment Policy: Students must have the status of “Enrolled” to attend any class or event. Students who are “Waitlisted” or “Pending Approval” will not be allowed to attend the class. If a student needs to cancel enrollment, please do so as early as  possible to allow someone on the waitlist to be enrolled.

*Attendance Policy: Students must attend at least 90% of the class to be able to receive credit. Should a student need to miss any portion of the class, they must contact the Training  Branch beforehand for further information.
